When I begin writing a novel, I generally have a vague notion of the theme and a rough idea of the challenges my hero and heroine will face, but little else. I never quite know where my characters will take me … or how the Lord will weave His truths into their hearts.
With all the hatred and bitterness so prevalent in today’s society, I felt the Lord nudging me to create a story in which my hero and heroine experience an onslaught of situations that challenge their faith, ones which force them to choose between giving into anger and resentment or displaying Christlike love.
The Civil War seemed a fitting backdrop to play out their struggles. At various points within the novel, both Drew and Caroline must make the conscious choice to love their enemies—even those who mistreat them without any known reason.

While en route to aid Confederate soldiers injured in battle near her home, Southerner Caroline Dunbar stumbles across a wounded Union sergeant. Unable to ignore his plea for help, she tends his injuries and hides him away, only to find her attachment to him deepen with each passing day. But when her secret is discovered, Caroline incurs her father’s wrath and, in turn, unlocks a dark secret from the past which she is determined to unravel.
After being forced to flee his place of refuge, Sergeant Andrew Gallagher fears he’s seen the last of Caroline. When word reaches him that President Lincoln has been shot, Drew is assigned the task of tracking down the assassin. The Civil War period has always been one that has interested me; I wrote half of my senior thesis on it in college. Historical fiction is my favorite genre, too, so your book is definitely on my to-read list!
